Great British Tennis Weekend Saturday 6 August

Let me set the scene – warm sunshine, cheerful bunting, great music and delicious refreshments, the thwack of tennis balls, fresh air, exercise and friendly faces  – this is what greeted the nearly 50 people who turned up for our Great British Tennis Weekend Saturday 6 August.

With many of the Committee plus lots of club members new and old on hand to welcome newcomers, we offered something for everyone.  Sara Oswell and Ed Alley did sterling work running fun games and drills for the many juniors who came down while Bill Oakley spent time giving hints and tips on court to adults who were new/rusty to the game  The rest of us chatted to and fed interested new faces as well as providing information on everything that club has to offer - cardio tennis, social tennis, team tennis and coaching for all ages and levels and Jenny Lever/Mike Linsell were on hand to register and/or sign people up for membership on Clubspark.

It was also an opportunity to advertise our Community Access  on Courts 1 and 2 (for more information on this click on our Hire a Court Non-Members tab above).

A big thank you to everyone who was involved in making it a very successful day.  It was a fantastic team effort - something our club does so well.

Alexander and Bruce win the boys 12U Aegon Division 2 - 17th July 2016

Congratulations to Alexander Lyons and Bruce Haw who were successful in the final, away against Bramhall Queensgate. This makes the Cuddington and Sandiway 12U A team, Aegon Team Tennis Cheshire champions 2016 for division 2.

There were 21 sides entered into Division 2 into 4 boxes. The boys won a tough box, beating Hoylake A, David Lloyd Cheshire Oaks, Hartford B, Port Sunlight and Birkenhead.

They then got past Knutsford in the Play-off semi final in a tight match and then the victory today again came down to the final doubles match.

Well done to the boys!

Wimbledon' Social Tournament - Sunday 3rd July

Well the rain held off and we were rewarded with sunny skies and a fantastic turnout of 25 players ready to do battle! It was great to see a number of old friends and new to the Club mix in for an afternoon of backhands and slices!

Under the ever enthusiastic and 'unique' style of our dear Linda Smith, assisted by Heather McBride, 4 rounds of social tennis was played with FUN being the order of the day. Some nifty skills were on display earning 'some money cannot buy' spot prizes (and a kiss!) from Linda, along with a tennis themed quiz question at each round.

Worthy Winners for the men's was our Chairman Mike Linsell and joint ladies winners Sarah Fryer and Molly Finnigan, each enjoying a bottle of wine.

Everyone then enjoyed delicious strawberries and cream washed down by cooling jugs of Pimms - in true Wimbledon style, along with homemade cakes generously baked by Heather McBride and Coral - thank you.

A fantastic afternoons social tennis amongst friends - its what we do best at Cuddington!

Here's to the next one - see you there!

Gala Day Saturday 11th June

Armed with our giant tennis racquet and our Play Tennis for Free banners, we ran a busy stall on Saturday 11 June at the Cuddington and Sandiway Village Gala Day. We ran two fun games – the ever popular Guess How Many Balls in the Box game with a goody bag prize and also a simple game to hit 3 tennis balls into a bin which proved very addictive with many youngsters who played again and again to try and get their name into the draw for a brand new tennis racquet (thanks to our coach John for this great prize!). The goody bag was run by Margaret Hough and the tennis racquet was won by one of our Junior members, Caitlin McKendrick. Well done to both!

In addition to the games, we were busy giving out lots of information on membership and coaching, but also, more importantly, a flyer about the Great British Tennis Weekend that we are holding at the club on Saturday 6 August from 9.00am-2.30pm plus information about the imminent opening of Courts 1 & 2 to the community/general public with a link to our website for information on when this will go live.

LTA Road to Wimbledon

The LTA ‘Road to Wimbledon’ competition (sponsored by HSBC) is the biggest junior tournament in British tennis.  It is open to all 14 & under players and our winner progresses to the County final, with the opportunity to then compete on the world famous grass courts at Wimbledon!

So on Sunday 12th June we knew our boys (11 – 14 years olds) would be competing keenly for the opportunity, but we couldn’t have predicted such a close competition.  Each player was committed to every game they played, with close matches throughout, several being decided by sudden-death tie breaks. The semi finals produced some nail-biting tennis, with Joe Hulmston and Owen Jackson narrowly beating Ryan Roscher and Edward Pearson.

Congratulations to Owen Jackson, a very worthy winner on the day, who will now go on to compete in the County Finals on 9th July.  We also congratulate and thank our other competitors, Miles, Nathan, Max and Harry, who showed great maturity and sportsmanship throughout the competition and made their families and our Club very proud.

Quorn Family Tennis Cup

The weather held nicely for us on our first family tennis event on Saturday 30 April – the Quorn Family Tennis Cup. This LTA-initiated family event proved very popular with young and not so young, as 13 U10s each paired up with an over 18 to enter this fun tournament which was played on mini tennis courts with mini red balls. It was played in a round robin format with each match scored as a first to 7 points tie-break. After all the rounds were played, the top 4 pairs contested the semi-finals with the 2 winners battling it out in a closely fought final.

A big well done to our overall winners who were 9 year old Ollie Simpson and his Dad Keith who beat runners up Dominic Brook, also 9, and his grandad Peter Hales. The winners’ details are entered on the LTA website and they will get to play in a regional version of the event held later in the summer.

The event was played throughout in such a great spirit by juniors and adults alike and was such a success that we have agreed to run another one later in the season – so watch this space!

American Tournament 3rd April 2016

The weather held fair for the first American Tournament of the season which was held on Sunday 3 April.  The theme was Spring so the clubhouse was festooned with yellow and green balloons and players were encouraged to come dressed in bright Spring colours.  An encouraging 20 members came down to enjoy a bit of fun and informal but competitive play with Bill and Waveney Oakley running an entertaining afternoon’s tennis.  It was closely contested at the top with a tie for the winning spot between Helen Carter and Emma Hulme who both received their prizes from Club Chairman, Mike Linsell.  The afternoon was topped off with tea and delicious cakes made by some of our members.

Sara Oswell gets club's first Junior Bursary

The Club recently introduced a Junior Bursary Scheme to recognise those junior members who make a significant contribution to the Club through volunteering to support our junior social tennis and coaching activities. For a junior who qualifies for a Bursary, the Scheme provides a financial contribution by the Club towards the cost of obtaining the LTA Level 1 Coaching Assistant qualification.

We are delighted to announce that Sara Oswell, who is one of our established junior Leaders, has become the first person to be given a Bursary award by the Club and she is seen here receiving her award at the recent AGM from Mike Linsell, Club Chairman.

Sara will undertake her LTA level 1 Coaching Assistant qualification during March and we wish her every success both in her Level 1 course and also in her continuing role supporting the Club’s junior activities.
