Junior Update - Aegon Tennis League

As last year, C&S TC will be entering junior teams into the Aegon Tennis league.  This is a team-based competition with regular league matches.  Teams compete on a county basis in leagues which are appropriate to their player standard.  This year the 2014 league season will run from April to June.
The Aegon league gives the opportunity for juniors to play competitive matches against players from other clubs.  For those that haven’t played many matches, it is a good introduction into the joys (and tribulations!) of competitive play.  Matches are played ‘home’ or ‘away’ and gives juniors the chance to visit other clubs and experience different playing surfaces/conditions.
As there is a mix of singles and doubles in any match, there is more focus on ‘the team’ which many players find enjoyable.  For the more experienced, it’s a chance to develop their matchplay and practice what they’ve been taught in their lessons!  For all players it’s an opportunity to represent the club and remind us oldies what our young players can do.
The Aegon league age categories and team captains are: 8&U Jo Baskeyfield; 9&U Gillian Jackson; 10&U Carl Haw; 12&U Andy Long; 14&U Jackie Carter and 16&U Mark Broadbent.
Team trials for the Aegon League will be held during March - date to be confirmed.

Bruce won a Wrexham Winter Matchplay Mixed singles tournament on Saturday 9th November at the Wrexham Tennis Centre. Monkhouse Shield

On Sunday 22nd September the prestigious Annual County 18&U Junior Doubles Competition (the Monkhouse Shield) was held at Congleton Tennis Club.
Our junior boys were represented by Chris Anderson, Chris Alley, Eddy Dickinson and Morgan Carlick, with Gemma England and Sara Oswell joining forces with two of Congleton’s girls to form the ‘Cuddleton’ team.
Our ‘young’ girls came an amazing 3rd in the competition, with the boys taking 3rd place in the plate – all against very serious and experienced competition. Well done to you all.

1st September 2013, finals day, and no rain!!  The weather was not quite up to the standard of last year, but definitely better than the year before when torrential rain marred the finals day and prevented many matches being played on the day.  The tennis played was excellent, watched by a large crowd of supporters, with very close matches in the ladies singles, mens doubles and fun mixed doubles.  The longest match of the afternoon going to the ladies singles where Lynne and Ruth were on court for nearly two hours!

Of course the afternoon would not be as enjoyable if it wasn’t for the refreshments, especially the home made cakes, which were appreciated by both the spectators and players.  So, a big thank you for all of you who participated in the smooth running of the afternoon, the players, spectators, helpers, and once again, to whoever organized the weather.

This day was a great success.  Many thanks to you all.

Gerry Ferber & Maureen Kirby tournament Aug 2013

Our annual ‘social’ tournament, held in memory of two of the Club’s esteemed past members, saw a record turnout of 30 players and a number of enthusiastic supporters too – eager to make their contribution to the traditional ‘special awards’ nominations!

A number of our talented younger players – still celebrating the results of their A-levels – were joined by team players, social players and a very ‘game’ new member who had only joined a week ago!

Both trophies were closely contested with the winners conquering not only their opponents but also the annual distraction of the dreaded handicapping and the smoke from the BBQ!

Norman Kirby and Carol Ferber presented the trophies to two very deserving winners, Linda Pinder & Damian Cookson.

Junior Tennis Club Tournament 2013

On Saturday 6th July Cuddington and Sandiway Tennis Club held a very successful Junior Finals and Presentation Day
Over 50 children took part in the tournament which was split into age-groups, the 8 & under, 9 & under and 10 & under groups competing in round-robin events, the 12 & under, 14 & under, 14 & under and 18 & under all playing ‘the Wimbledon way’ (knock out!) format.

Highlight of the afternoon was perhaps the 2-hour well-matched and well-tempered battle in the 12 & under section between Nathan Cosford and Jason Waring, with Nathan the eventual winner.

The afternoon was supported by a large crowd of parents and club members (despite clashing with the Wimbledon Ladies’ Final…) and several of our older juniors helped all morning umpiring the younger players.

The club also presented certificates and medals to the parent captains and players who competed in each of LTA  Aegon Teams this summer.  Six teams played their first season in the national league in a high standard of tennis against clubs in the Wirral and Manchester.  Our 14 and under team were particularly successful, finishing in a very creditable second place.

The tournament role of honour:

8 & Under                   Owen Jackson
9 & Under                   Bruce Haw
10 & Under                 Ryan Roscher
12 & Under Girls        Eleanor Rayson
12 & Under Boys        Nathan Cosford
14 & Under                 Harry Broadbent
16 & Under                 Chris Anderson
18 & Under                 Chris Anderson
14 & Under Doubles  Harry Broadbent & Adam Hughes
18 & Under Doubles  Ed Dickinson & Morgan Carlick

Chairman Margaret Wilding said:

"We entered an amazing 6 junior teams in the Aegon League. This is a national league and involved our juniors playing in a high standard of tennis against some strong , prestigious clubs and travelling to the Wirral, Manchester etc for away matches. This could not have been achieved without the invaluable support and hard work of the parents who took on the role of team captains so a big thankyou to Jo Baskeyfield, Sara Wakefield, Amanda Cornwell, Lucy Long, Jackie Carter and Steven Downs. Congratulations to all our team players, the club is so proud of your achievements and how well you won and how well you lost! Your sporting attitude was noted and complimented on several occasions which is all an excellent foundation for the future."

Linda Smith chosen by the village gala committee to receive
Citizenship Award 2013

The club is very proud to announce that long time member Linda Smith was chosen by this years village gala committee to receive their annual Citizenship Award. The citation read out at the ceremony to mark the event read as follows:-

She has given unpaid and dedicated service to the club since 1979 primarily in her work with junior coaching. She has encouraged and inspired children of all ages in tennis lessons, tournaments  and in running junior teams in the South and Mid Cheshire League and the LTA Aegon leagues.  She exudes enthusiasm and passion for the game and the success of the club. She has a strong sense of responsibility towards the organisation of the club which manifests itself in many ways - from clearing leaves, over seeing court maintenance and supporting committee members. She was involved with the commissioning of two extra tennis courts and the planning for the extension to the club house.  She also started a Ladies morning back in the 1980's which still runs successfully today. Think of the club and you think of Linda!

In addition to all this she also finds time each week for voluntary work helping at St Luke's hospice which again is evidence of her care and concern for the well being of those in the local community.

Norman Kirby at 80

We had an auspicious occasion after the American Tournament as the club welcomed life member Norman Kirby and friends to celebrate Norman’s 80th birthday later in April 2013.

Margaret paid tribute to Norman’s long involvement, continuing regular play and contributions to the club over the years, which include, amongst others, encouraging juniors, committee work, providing court benches and even cutting back the laurel hedges.

She presented him with a camellia to mark the occasion and led a round of “Happy Birthday to You” and 3 cheers. In reply, Norman thanked the club for all the happy hours it had given him and the many friends he has made. He is very pleased to be part of an all embracing club that encouraged all abilities from juniors to team players. He then cut the tennis themed birthday cake.

Thank you Norman.

Easter Monday American Tournament

On a bitterly cold afternoon 26 members braved the weather to enter the first American Tournament of the year.
After some hard fought games and lots of running around to keep warm, a cup of tea and slice of cake was very welcome.

Joint winners of the ladies’ side were Liz Coxon and Lynne Price; men’s winner was Carl Townshend (new member) and runner up Alex Lerczak.

Many thanks to Linda Smith for the organisation on the day, Margaret Wilding, Graham Finnigan, Jayne Purdue, and the ladies who baked the cakes.
