Firework Themed American Tournament 4th November 2012

Well, the 'firework' themed Sunday tournament certainly launched with a bang......20 members joined in (amazing for NOVEMBER!) the tennis was a cracker, the ambience sparkled and the delicious cakes disappeared in a flash!!!

In the final round, Val Keeling just managed to whizz past Lynne Warburton & Molly Finnigan. Whilst our two resident firecrackers were fighting it out to the end, Alex Lerczak narrowly beating Damain Cookson with Alan Robertii pushing them all the way.

Great afternoon, great fun - great Club!

2nd September 2012, finals day, and no rain!!  In contrast to last year, when torrential rain marred the finals day and prevented many matches being played on the day, this was a fine sunny afternoon.  The tennis played was excellent, watched by a large crowd of supporters, with very close matches in the mens singles, doubles and ladies doubles.  The longest match of the afternoon going to the ladies doubles match where Liz, Hilary, Gaynor and Margaret were on court for 2 hours and 55 minutes.  Margaret then had to gather her remaining energy and wiles to play in the veterans mixed doubles, which finally finished at 7 p.m.

Of course the afternoon would not be as enjoyable if it wasn’t for the refreshments, especially the home made cakes, which were appreciated by both the spectators and players.  So, a big thank you for all of you who participated in the smooth running  of the afternoon, the players, spectators, helpers and especially to whoever organised the weather.
This day was a great success.  Many thanks to you all.

Val Keeling
Tournament Organiser.

Gerry Ferber & Maureen Kirby tournament Aug 2012

Bank Holiday Sunday and the annual tournament in memory of two of the club’s past members saw a good turnout. Twenty four players competed in bright sunshine under the watchful eyes of tournament director Linda Smith. Linda organisational skills kept everyone on their toes and her own personal handicap system ensured that in the end the results were very close!

It was particularly encouraging to see so many young players joining the more ‘established’(!) membership and the top four in the men’s competition included three players aged 18 -20. So very well done to (veteran) Dick Franks who was in 3rd place, one point behind Michael Johnston in 2nd place. And with only one more point, the winner was new member Alex Lerczak who had obviously enjoyed his initiation and welcome to our club and, of course, his trophy presented by Carol Ferber.

The ladies competition was also closely contested with only a handful of points separating the eventual winner from the other players. Playing in her first tournament at the club, Liz Coxson came third, and as well as organising all the delicious food for the afternoon, Linda Sealey found the energy to end her busy afternoon in second place!  The trophy was won by Liz Oldfield, a seasoned competitor who was delighted to receive the trophy for a second time from one of our longest-playing members, Norman Kirby.

An outstanding afternoon was rounded off by a delicious BBQ and drinks.

Junior Championships 2012

Cuddington’s junior tennis stars all proved they deserved their places on the Club’s show courts on Saturday.  The large crowd of enthusiastic spectators were treated to an afternoon of sparkling and exciting tennis, with the young players often exhibiting skills and tenacity well beyond their years.

Chris Anderson dominated the U16 and U18 boys’ categories winning both singles and, partnered by Ben Hilton, taking home the U18 doubles trophy in a close final against Edward Dickinson and Morgan Carlick.
In the U14 and U12 boys’ singles, the spectators were treated to two closely contested matches, eventually won by Harry Broadbent (U14) and Silas Plant (U12).
The U14 doubles was a nail-biting match, finally won by the older pair, Harry Broadbent and Sam Plant in a championship tie-break, with Sam’s younger brother a close runner-up with his partner Harry Carter.

The girls’ finals were dominated by two sets of sisters (Serena & Venus watch out!).  Gemma England narrowly beat Ella Pemberton in a tie-break final and then joined by her older sister, Alice, the Pemberton’s snatched victory in the doubles final, beating Gemma and her younger sister Bethany in another very entertaining tie-break final set.

Mini-Tennis Championships 2012

On Saturday 30th June the club held a very successful Mini Tennis Tournament for our young players from 5 – 11 years old.  Over 30 boys and girls brightened up a fairly grey and windy day with an entertaining display of skilled, competitive tennis.  The large crowd of parents and club members was treated to games which at times matched (exceeded??!) the excitement of Centre Court in Wimbledon, played throughout with a great sense of sportsmanship and maturity.

Our grateful thanks to the young tennis leaders who gave up their time to help umpire and organise the day. The final winners were:

Six of our junior members were selected to work with coach, Jane Wright, to gain their LTA Tennis Leaders Certification. This award provides the foundation for young players to help with coaching and competitions at their club and school, gain valuable leadership experience and gain a recognised coaching qualification.

Christopher Alley, Chris Anderson, Jamie Donhue, Brad Entwistle, Ben Hilton & Matt McKay (15/16 year olds) have all completed the required modules successfully and are now volunteering with the juniors at the club, and playing an active role in the club's activities.

Nick Sommerville, 17, has taken his talents one step further and qualified on the first rung of the coaching ladder, gaining his LTA Level 1 certification.

Mike Bain, Director or the new Lawn Tennis Association's (LTA) National Tennis Centre & HQ in Roehampton, presented young players with their awards on Saturday 21sth April.

Coach Jane Wright said "I have been very impressed by the level of dedication shown by all the boys and the standards they've achieved in both their on court and project work. They have all committed to helping at Junior Club mornings and junior tournaments, and Nick has been assisting with the coaching groups and has already become a key member of the team. They are all very enthusiastic and excellent role models for the game of tennis."

Quote from Mike Bain "Getting enthusiastic youngsters into the game of tennis is really important if we are going to grow the game locally. The Tennis Leader Award is a fantastic scheme which provides opportunities for 14 - 18 yr olds to work and volunteer in tennis. Cuddington and Sandiway tennis club have always had a thriving junior section and I am really pleased to hear about the ongoing development of the club and the juniors."

Val Taylor turns 80!

Congratulations to one of our most senior members, Val Taylor who recently turned 80.

The occasion was marked with a beautiful cake, flowers, and a bottle of the hard stuff, from all her playing friends at a recent ladies Wednesday morning session at the club.

Despite the relaxed nature of the player depicted on her cake Val still plays a mean game of tennis and only comes on a Wednesday to win - not make up the numbers!

The club committee agreed unanimously at its last meeting to make Val an honorary member of the club in recognition of all she has done for the club over the years. A certificate and gifts were presented to her at another ladies Wednesday morning session 2 weeks later.
